1932-1946 Henri Cartier-Bresson Scrapbook
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) was captured by the German army and became a prisoner during World War II in 1940. He attempted to escape twice, but failed. Finally, he succeeded in escaping in 1943. Around that time, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York thought Bresson had already died in the war. The staff were preparing for an exhibition, considering how to handle the exhibition after his death. However, he was alive and reappeared, so one can imagine the surprise of those involved at the time. Bresson was delighted to learn about the exhibition and decided to show all his works through his own curation.
In 1946, Bresson visited New York with 300 prints in a suitcase. He bought a scrapbook, glued the prints in, and gave the scrapbook to the curator of MoMA. Thus, on February 4, 1947, an exhibition was held to celebrate his survival from the battlefield. This book is a reprint based on the scrapbook from that time, and it is also a commemorative book produced in conjunction with the exhibitions held at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation in Paris and the ICP (International Center of Photography) in New York in 2006 and 2007.
